Self Discovery Many modern day novels conquer the topic of self discovery. They delve into a seemingly endless search for one's self to try and explain the purpose of soul searching.

This journey that people take to find out who they are and what they are here for is the main theme of many popular books. Oedipus Rex represents one of the greatest tragedies ever written. A classical style tragedy contains six main elements within a plot. These sequences are the exposition, the rising action, the climax, the falling action and finally, the catastrophe.

The exposition usually takes The way Sophocles wrote the story it was meant to be a tragedy. The main character as defined is supposed to come to some revealation about himself and his faults. His fault that would cost him everything. All the things that make a tragedy A Victim of Himself Oedipus Rex is a religious parable of the dangers of pride. It is also a tale of the friction that occurs along the boundary of politics and religion.

Ultimately, it a tragic fable that delivers a clear message, those who possess fatal flaws are fated to suffer dearly from them. In this play, the The Oedipus Trilogy was originally written by Sophocles and is meant to be told in a story-telling fashion. Oedipus the King is widely regarded as a tragedy of fate.

Briefly stated, it begins with a terrible plague that destroys the city. King Oedipus sends a messenger to the oracle at Delphi to find a cure. The answer that is received suggests to find out who the killer of King Laios was. Oedipus sends for the prophet Teiresias, who after much arguing, finally reveals that Oedipus himself is the murder. The events in Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles, show an underlying relationship of man's free will existing within the cosmic order or fate which the Greeks believed guided the universe in a harmonious purpose.

Man was free to choose and was ultimately held responsible for his own actions. Both the concept of fate and free will played an it regal part in Oedipus' destruction.

The word knowledge or someone who is knowledgeable can mean a variety of things depending on what context they are used. His flaws are a hot temper and impulsiveness, but without those traits his heroic course of self-discovery would never occur.

Fate for Sophocles is not something essentially external to human beings but something at once inherent in them and transcendent. Oracles and prophets in this play may show the will of the gods and indicate future events, but it is the individual who gives substance to the prophecies. Moreover, there is an element of freedom granted to human beings, an ability to choose, where the compulsions of character and the compulsions of the gods are powerless.

It is in the way individuals meet the necessities of their destiny that freedom lies. They can succumb to fate, pleading extenuating circumstances, or they can shoulder the full responsibility for what they do. In the first case they are merely pitiful, but in the second they are tragic and take on a greatness of soul that nothing can conquer. A crucial point in the play is that Oedipus is entirely unaware that he killed his father and wedded his mother.

He himself is the cause of the plague on Thebes, and in vowing to find the murderer of Laius and exile him he unconsciously pronounces judgment on himself. Oedipus, the king and the hero who saved Thebes from the Sphinx, believes in his own innocence. He is angry and incredulous when the provoked Teiresias accuses him of the crime, so he jumps to the conclusion that Teiresias and Creon are conspirators against him.
